Windward Community College Library & Learning Center

The new three-story Windward Community College Library and Learning Commons, also known as Hale La‘akea, opened in the fall semester of 2012. It serves as an academic center that combines five previously separate campus buildings with services such as the library, learning skills center, a computer lab, multimedia lab, classrooms, study lounge, TV lounge, individual study areas and a coffee shop.

The project has been certified LEED Silver with many practical sustainable features and innovative green building design ideas that were implemented into the design and construction of the new facility. Energy efficient features include storm water collection, low flow plumbing fixtures, waterless urinals, renewable energy PV system, solar panels, natural day-lighting to 75% of occupied spaces, high performance glazing to reduce heat and glare transmission into the building and high EER VAV air conditioning system.
