The project consists of nine (9) new buildings for the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders; Six classroom buildings and three Creative Learning Centers. Total construction cost is approximately $52 million with construction completion in July 2004. Our firm designed the plumbing, fire protection, air conditioning and ventilation systems with heavy emphasis on Green Building Design and LEED.
Environmentally conscious and sustainable concepts implemented included a 500-ton ice plant for cooling, photovoltaic cells to generate electricity for lighting, recycling rain water for irrigation, indirect lighting using light shelves, extensive use of trade winds for natural ventilation, waterless urinals, etc. The project obtained Gold certification with the U.S. Green Building Council. Punahou School started to take occupancy of two buildings in August 2006, with all nine buildings being occupied and in use today.
